Legacy Windows Vista/7 peer-to-peer collaboration feature. Allows discovery of nearby Windows users on the same local network for document sharing and real-time collaboration sessions.

What It Does (Historical)

When enabled, People Near Me broadcasts your display name and presence information on the local network, making you discoverable by other users running the same feature. Supported applications (Windows Meeting Space) could then initiate shared sessions.

Security Risk in Windows 7 Environments

Enabled by default in Vista/7 — this broadcasts your username and online presence to every machine on the LAN without explicit user awareness. On enterprise networks this reveals:

• Your Windows username
• Your presence status
• Your machine identity

Recommendation for Windows 7: Disable People Near Me:
collab.cpl → Sign Out → confirm.

Or disable via Group Policy: User Configuration → Windows Settings → Windows Collaboration Computer Settings.

Status in Windows 10/11

The underlying Windows Peer-to-Peer Networking infrastructure was largely removed in Windows 10. The collab.cpl applet may still be present but is non-functional — clicking it produces no meaningful action or does nothing.

Modern Alternatives

Real collaboration needs are now served by dedicated platforms:

• Microsoft Teams — screen sharing, real-time co-authoring, presence
• SharePoint / OneDrive — shared document access
• Windows Quick Assist — remote help sessions
